Air Sealing and Thermal Insulation for New Building Construction

Designing and constructing energy-efficient buildings for minimizing the air leakage and moisture retention is highly demandable these days. Construction of a building is dependable on various aspects including both natural and man-made liabilities. Climatic conditions and geographical area are major parameters that decide the building design, material requirements, etc. Using the best techniques and materials can help to build an energy-efficient design.

There are two major methods that are perfect to attain thermal stability and provide a comfortable living space. Air Sealing and Thermal Insulation Techniques are the most prominent way to enhance immunity of your house to fight back any deterioration from external conditions.

Let’s discuss the two techniques one by one.

Air Sealing Techniques

 ADA and SCS:

They are the two wall construction techniques which are essential to develop an air barrier within the building. Airtight Drywall Approach (ADA) and Simple Caulk and Seal (SCS) helps to reduce any air leakage in the building to enhance the energy efficiency.

The ADA technique ensures the sealing of joints, joists, openings and any cracks near joining points during the construction phase of the building. While SCS technique is implemented after the drywall installation and exterior sheathing. Thus, SCS is ineffective to cavities and inaccessible areas.

 Air Barriers:

To block any unwanted air exchange between the interior and exterior environment. The random movement of the air via the cavities are stopped with the help of air barrier implementation. Air barriers seal the holes and cavities that allow a passage for the unwanted air.

However, air barriers are inefficient in blocking the vapor thus, if you live in a climatic condition that requires vapor barriers, then you have to install an additional vapor barrier. Air leakage is extensively cut-down with the help of sealing of gaps between sheet goods such as sheathing and drywall with caulk, tape, or spray foams. Moreover, there are other types of insulation materials that enhance thermal stability and prevents air leakage.

Thermal Insulation Approach

A modern, comfortable and highly equipped house is what we all want but to build a house it requires much more tip to toe approach. Finding every minute flaw while constructing can enhance thermal stability. If you want to design an energy efficient house then opt for whole-house systems design approach. In this approach architects, builders and insulator contractors strategize together to enhance the energy efficiency of your house.

This approach takes into account that various aspects of the house create an impact on the performance of the house to maintain a thermal stability. It includes various variables like site conditions, insulation, air sealing, water heating, local climatic conditions, lighting, and daylight, etc.

Usage of thermal insulation material during the construction process is more beneficial in terms of the performance and cost of installation. But before insulating the house, it is important to know where to insulate and R-value requirements. Depending on the climatic conditions, R-value and house requirements, your thermal insulation contractors decide on the type of thermal insulation material.

Some of the insulation types are as follows:

  • Batts or rolls insulation
  • Concrete block insulation
  • Foam board or rigid foam insulation
  • Loose-fill or blown-in insulation
  • Sprayed foam insulation
  • Structural insulated panels (SIPs)
  • Radiant barriers
  • Air bubble insulation

If a suitable combination of insulation sheathing and cavity insulation is chosen at the time of construction then, it will reduce energy consumption and helps you to save up billing cost.

Depending on the weather conditions you should decide the insulating materials. Say for instance, in hot climatic conditions use reflective barriers like radiant barriers for attic and roofs. In cold weather, use air bubble insulation sheets to attain thermal stability.

Using the best approach to insulate your house can offer great advantages in terms of cost-cutting and a comfortable living environment.
